There is / There are

Gebruik "there is" om te zeggen dat iets bestaat of om een enkelvoudig of ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord te beschrijven. Gebruik "there are" voor meervoudige zelfstandige naamwoorden. In vragen keer je onderwerp en werkwoord om: "Is there...?"

WANNEER TE GEBRUIKEN

Gebruik "there is/are" om het bestaan van iets in te leiden of aan te kondigen. Het is heel gebruikelijk om te beschrijven wat er in een plaats is, of om te stellen dat iets bestaat (of niet bestaat).

negativeThere isn't / There aren't + noun

There aren't any seats left.

VEELVOORKOMENDE FOUTEN

It is a problem with the computer.

Gebruik "there is" om het bestaan van iets aan te kondigen — niet "it is"

There is many students in the class.

There are many students in the class.

Gebruik "there are" met meervoudige zelfstandige naamwoorden

Tip

Het werkwoord "is" of "are" komt overeen met het zelfstandig naamwoord dat volgt, niet met "there". Let dus op wat erna komt: "There IS a dog" (enkelvoud) vs "There ARE dogs" (meervoud).
