There is / There are (있다)

There is / There are

무엇이 존재한다고 말하거나 단수명사/불가산명사를 묘사할 때 "there is"를 씁니다. 복수명사에는 "there are"를 씁니다. 의문문에서는 주어와 동사를 도치합니다: "Is there...?"

사용 시기

어떤 것의 존재를 소개하거나 알릴 때 "there is/are"를 사용합니다. 어떤 장소에 무엇이 있는지 설명하거나, 무언가가 존재한다(혹은 존재하지 않는다)는 것을 말할 때 아주 흔히 쓰입니다.

어떤 것의 존재를 소개할 때는 "it is"가 아니라 "there is"를 씁니다

복수명사에는 "there are"를 씁니다

팁

"is" 또는 "are"는 "there"가 아니라 그 뒤에 오는 명사와 일치합니다. 그러니 뒤에 무엇이 오는지 주의하세요: "There IS a dog" (단수) vs "There ARE dogs" (복수).
