過去進行形
Past Continuous
過去進行形は、過去の特定の時点で進行中だった動作を表します。was/were + 動詞-ing で作ります。進行中の動作が短い出来事で中断されたことを示すために、過去形とよく一緒に使われます。
使い方
過去のある時点で進行中の動作、過去の同時進行の二つの動作、または長い過去の動作が短い動作に中断される場合（多くは "when" や "while" と共に）使います。
構造
S + was/were + V-ingThey were playing football all afternoon.
彼らは午後ずっと**サッカーをしていました**。
S + wasn't/weren't + V-ingShe wasn't sleeping when I called.
電話したとき、彼女は**寝ていませんでした**。
Was/Were + S + V-ing?Were you studying at 8 o'clock last night?
昨夜8時に**勉強していましたか**？

スペリングルール（三人称単数）

よくある間違い
I was read when she called.
I was reading when she called.
過去進行形には was/were + V-ing が必要です。動詞の原形だけではダメです
While I was studying, she arrived.
While I was studying, she arrived. ✓ (this is correct!)
実はこれは正しいです！ "while" + past continuous が past simple によって中断される形です
ヒント
古典的なパターンを覚えましょう：「I WAS doing X when something happened.」過去進行形（was doing）＝長い背景の動作。過去形（happened）＝短い中断の動作。
